Types of testing
Usability testing
Basically, you sit people in front of a computer, ask them to do something, and watch how they do it.
There's lots of variants on this though, and while any testing is definitely better than no testing, sometimes the devil is in the details.
We can handle recruitment, task management, running tests (using the fabulous Morae software), and of course the analysis and making recommendations.
Split testing
Split testing is great. Basically, you create 2 or more versions of a page, send a certain percentage of your users to each version, and see which one performs the best.
There's nothing to beat it for raw, cold data. Don't argue amongst yourselves over which idea is best, test it. We can setup and manage tests for you. The real trick is knowing
what to test, and we can provide great advice on that based on our experience.
Multivariate testing
This is a bit like split testing, except you are testing variations on different pieces of the page. Which works best - this headline or that headline? Image 1, 2 or 3?
Multivarite testing is very powerful - so powerful we have a patent on a whole new way of doing it to make it far easier! Like split testing, the trick is knowing what to test.
Claude Hopkins, author of "Scientific Advertising":
"Almost any question can be answered cheaply, quickly and finally, by a test campaign. This is the only way to answer them, not by arguments around a table. Go to the court of last resort… The buyers of your product."
Claude was talking about direct mail, but it's never been truer on the internet.
The number one problem with most websites is they are created by the people that own them. They are the worst people in the world to create their own sites. Their view of what the customers want
and what the customers actually want are usually vastly different.
Bringin in "experts" doesn't help that much either. Sure, there are a few principles to follow. User testing is one of those things where the more you do it, the less you know. The "experts"
are the ones who have never done it. The real experts are those who shrug and say "I don't know". However, they also know the best direction to head to maximise results.
The solution is to test. At UseYourWeb, we love to test. One of the biggest buzzes is running a split test and seeing the new version out perform the old version by 30%. Or running some workshops
and seeing a few major flaws show up with easy fixes. Honestly, it's the best investment any website with more than $20,000 revenue/year can make.
