I had the same question in mind, for a similar site, www.jaiku.com. Haven't used it very long, but heard it's a little more intelligent (it aggregates all of your other RSS feeds) than Twitter. But the same micro-blogging concept applies.

For me, I don't really find myself microblogging very often. I'd have to pay if I want to mail or text message it by phone, or 'write a whole e-mail' just to get (barley) a sentence out. I'll stay skeptical for now.

I actually mostly use Meebo these days, but do also use GTalk quote a lot (which I can access via meebo when I want). You can chat to me on GTalk - markb at useyourweb.com :)

It is unethical. And the Consumentenbond (consumer rights organization in the Netherlands) want to do something about it with a 'Reportdesk Unfair Business Practices'. In Dutch: http://www.consumentenbond.nl/acties/6741972/?ticket=nietlid

Blue :) (I thought no one would ever ask!)

And yellow backgrounds on forms are better. Not sure about other colours.

I Just came away from a conference this week where I ran into a company called PostPath. They have an Exchange clone server. Runs on Linux. Interfaces natively with Outlook, but what I really like is they have client based on Zimbra. Way cool.

gmaildude,

what tony said :)

The chances of me loosing my laptop and having someone access my mail is greater than google cacheing it.

Navdeep,

Yeah I was tempted. I have ubuntu and frankly don't like it that much (but can appreciate it for what it is, and hope the ubuntu team keep it up). However, I fully appreciate that if I start using web based apps, the operating system becomes increasingly irrelevant. That was almost an implied point in my post, albeit a very subtle one.

Meight, you are right. However, Excel can't:

- Be used for free
- Collaborate in real time with another user (maybe it can using fancy sharepoint stuff, etc, not sure, but it isn't straight forward)
- Be accessed easily from any machine with a modern browser without having to install software

EditGrid does what I use excel for 90% of the time. Most people don't do TA, in depth analysis, etc. Sure, a significant number do, and I have at times in the past done most of those things you have listed. Plus I did say I was only flirting with it :) Want to work collaboratively on a quote or business plan with someone remote? Editgrid is miles ahead of excel for that sort of stuff.

Check out a book called "The Innovator's Dilemma". This is a *textbook* case of an innovators dilemma. And if Microsoft have half a brain, they will be very, very worried. Remember, I am ex-Microsoft, still have many friends there and they are one of my clients still. I don't have it in for them - I'm not some linux zealot. But this is reality - or my reality at least.
